Wie ich über Palermo nach Siena fuhr

- Ich bin durch Italien gereist mit der Vorstellung, eine arme Malerin zu sein. Ich habe Bilder gemalt gegen Kost und Logis. So müssen es die deutschen Künstler im 19. Jahrhundert gemacht haben, die einmal im Leben nach Italien wollten.
- Die Dauer der Gastfreundschaft richtete sich nach der Zeit, die ich gebraucht habe, um meine Arbeit zu tun. Man könnte auch sagen, ich habe Bilder gemalt, die man in fünf Tagen malen kann. Manchmal habe ich überlegt, ob es die Kategorie „angemessen gut“ für Bilder gibt.
- I travelled across Italy with the idea of being a poor painter. I offered to make paintings in exchange for room and board. I imagine that the German painters of the nineteenth century did the same.
- The duration of hospitality was determined by the time I needed to do my work. One could say that I did paintings which can possibly be done within four or five days. Sometimes I wondered whether there is a category for paintings like “appropriately good”.
